Hispanic Heritage Month Recipes

September 15–October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month, a period that honors generations of U.S. Latinos who have positively influenced and enriched our country. During this month-long annual tribute, we celebrate the rich cultural traditions, histories, and contributions of those who can trace their ethnic roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanish-speaking countries of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. The chosen dates reflect September independence anniversaries of multiple Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile and Belize.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are pleased to share a number of traditional Salvadoran recipes with you from our beloved staff member America Jimenez. Originally from El Salvador, America has a passion for cooking and sharing her delicious food with others. Check out her delicious recipes for a homemade meal you’re sure to enjoy.

Smith Avenue High Bridge Detour

To our valued West Side, West St. Paul, South St. Paul, Mendota Heights and Inver Grove Heights co-op customers: beginning Tuesday, September 5th, the Smith Avenue High Bridge will be closed in both directions, limiting access to pedestrians and vehicles crossing the river. This temporary closure will last through December of 2018 as the Minnesota Department of Transportation works to resurface the road over the entire bridge length. Over this 16 month time period, construction crews will also be conducting road work along Smith Avenue from West 7th Street south to Interstate 494 with temporary lane closures. Local access will be maintained on the Wabasha and Robert Street bridges. Interstate 35E, highway 52, highway 5, and highway 110 will also remain open.

The primary recommended detour route is Annapolis Street east to Robert Street to Kellogg Boulevard to West 7th Street. The alternative recommended route is Annapolis Street west to highway 13 to highway 55 to highway 5 to West 7th Street. Please plan your co-op shopping trips accordingly. We thank you for your patience and continued patronage!

West 7th Store Deli Remodel

9/13 Update: As of 7:30 a.m., our West 7th deli remodel is complete and the deli is fully functioning again! Stop in and check out our newly remodeled space.

9/12 Update: As of 11:00 a.m., our salad bar, hot bar, hot soups and grab and go sandwiches are all available. We are awaiting final inspection for our made-to-order operations – made-to-order sandwiches, juices, espresso drinks and smoothies will be returning soon.

We’re proud to announce a remodel of our West 7th store deli! Please pardon the mess as we work to improve our offerings. Construction has begun and, if all goes well, should wrap up by Tuesday, September 12th.

Grab-and-go sandwiches, salads, coffee and desserts; bottled juices; baked goods; and whole roasted chickens will remain available throughout the remodel process. We will not have made-to-order sandwiches and juices, hot pizza, hot soup, smoothies, and espresso drinks at West 7th during this time. Full service delis will remain available at our East 7th and Selby stores.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience throughout the process. We’re excited to bring you improved deli service and additional prepared food options at West 7th!

Why Bulk is Best

Mississippi Market offers hundreds of self-service bulk bins loaded with grains, rice, oats, beans, pasta, shelled nuts, coffee, teas, spices, granola, dried fruits, candy, and more. We also carry liquid bulk items including maple syrup, honey, oils, soaps, shampoos, and laundry detergents. You’re sure to find something great in our well-stocked bulk department. Some of our best sellers include organic raisins, oats, honey, flour, walnuts, organic popcorn, and a variety of whole bean coffee.

Buying in bulk doesn’t mean dealing with large quantities. At the co-op, buying in bulk means reducing food waste, using minimal to no packaging, and saving money. You can even bring in your own reusable containers to fill! The best part is that it’s easier on the earth and your pocketbook.
