Fresh, Organic Seasonal Citrus Direct from Growers

texascitrusEach year during the early winter season we receive an annual shipment of bright, ripe, juicy citrus direct from G&S Groves in McAllen, Texas. This family-run farm grows organic navel oranges, Red Rio grapefruit, Persian limes, Key limes, and Meyer lemons, all of which are available for sale at Mississippi Market.

Although these great tasting fruits are not grown locally since they thrive in warmer climates, we sell them at the co-op because they’re produced using environmentally-beneficial agricultural practices. Plus, our direct relationship with farmers David and Bonnie guarantees great produce and helps support a small family farm with multiple citrus groves.

These fruits are only available at the co-op once a year – don’t miss your chance to taste them!

Hoppin’ John for Good Luck in the New Year

New Year’s Day in South America is celebrated by many families with Hoppin’ John, a stew made with black eyed peas. Some people add a penny or other small trinket to the beans when serving them. Whoever finds it is promised especially good luck in the New Year. Many recipes can be found for Hoppin’ John as there are many cooks who make it; use this one as a foundation for creating your own version.
