Local Profile: Organic Valley

Organic Valley is a farmer-owned cooperative whose central mission is “to support rural communities by protecting the health of the family farm – working toward both economic and environmental sustainability.” Founded 27 years ago just across the Mississippi River in Wisconsin’s Coulee Region at a time when small farmers were given the message to get big or get out, seven farmers came together on a mission to change the way people thought about food. Today, their co-op has grown to include over 1,800 family farms that produce some of the highest-quality local dairy products available.

Help Our Local Farmers Raise Relief Funds

social-media-squareThis year’s heavy rains have significantly impacted many of the local farms that supply regional natural foods cooperatives. Damage to crops is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and several farmers are facing the prospect of losing their farms. Impacted farms include Featherstone Farm, Heartbeet Farm, Hoch Orchard & Gardens, Driftless Organics, and more.

Mississippi Market is partnering with other Twin Cities co-ops to raise funds to assist our farmers. Through the end of November, Mississippi Market will be accepting relief donations for impacted farms at our customer service desks. We’ve kicked it off with a $3,000 donation.

Relief funds will be administered by local nonprofit Cooperative Development Services (CDS) through their Cooperative Development Fund. CDS is a 501(c)3 charitable family of funds that advances economic development through cooperative enterprise. Their mission is to promote community, economic, and social development through cooperative enterprises.

Please consider donating in-store to raise relief funds for our local farmers!

You may also send a local farmers relief fund donation check directly to CDS. Checks can be made out to:

Celebrating 20 Years of Youth Food Empowerment

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Midwest Food Connection (MFC) becoming incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit. MFC was founded in 1993 by Mississippi Market Co-op and The Wedge Co-op as a community outreach initiative dedicated to educating youth about natural foods, local sustainable farming practices, and the cultural origins of our foods. Since 1996, the initiative has grown and flourished as a nonprofit that empowers elementary school children to make healthy and responsible food choices. In addition to Mississippi Market and The Wedge, the following natural foods stores currently provide significant financial support to support MFC – Seward Co-op Grocery & Deli, Valley Natural Foods, and Linden Hills Co-op.
