Product Policy

Mississippi Market’s mission is to create positive change in the community by influencing the production, distribution, and enjoyment of food. We provide member-owners and shoppers a selection of high quality products and information that they can trust.  Our product selection promotes personal, economic and environmental health, and serves the needs of our diverse community.

First and foremost, our food will be delicious. We all want food to taste good! We also want our products to be wholesome and safe, so as a rule the products on our shelf will be free from artificial flavors, colors, flavors, preservatives and sweeteners; as well as from high fructose corn syrup or hydrogenated oils. We occasionally make an exception to this to bring in a temporary holiday specific product; to meet the requirements of the WIC program, or to provide a unique product that does not have a counterpart which more closely adheres to our standards.

We will give strong preference to products that are desired by our members and shoppers and brands that share our commitment to the following values:

Locally produced

Certified organic

Fairly-priced, offering value to our customers and member-owners

Free of growth hormones or antibiotics

Produced or distributed by cooperatively owned vendors

Produced using practices that support sustainable agriculture

Available for purchase on the WIC program

Raised using sound animal husbandry and humane practices

Support for Non-GMO

Mississippi Market opposes GMO foods. While we prefer not to carry any items using genetic engineering/modification, we cannot promise our stores are free of such items. Federal legislation that requires the disclosure of genetically engineered ingredients was signed in July 2016. However, we are still several years out before this law is implemented.  We continue to advocate for stronger labeling requirements and work to educate our shoppers about foods that are more likely to contain GMO ingredients, so that they may choose what is right for their diets.

Since May 2013, Mississippi Market has remained committed to not adding any new product lines that contain GMO-likely ingredients (corn, soy, canola, non-cane sugar, cottonseed oil, papaya or summer squash) unless they are certified organic or Non-GMO Project verified.

As a cooperative, we believe in the power of economic democracy. Rather than imposing boycotts, we encourage shopper to vote with their dollars for the foods and products they enjoy buying from our stores.
