We reached an important milestone on Friday, August 8th, when the St. Paul Planning Commission approved our land use request, including a required landscape variance. While this is a substantial step forward, we still have several more items to address before we break ground. In early September, we will go before the Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC), seeking final approval for the building’s exterior design. We have had many positive meetings with the HPC and they have been pleased the design process. If you’re interested in learning more about the design process, or would like to extend your support for the project, we’d love to see member-owners at the meeting!

In addition to gaining the city’s approval, we have been working closely with Dominium, our future neighbors to the southwest, to hammer out the details of our shared parking lot and driveways. Once this has been completed, we will be able to finalize our purchase agreement with the city. We expect to be able to begin construction by mid-October, and open in the summer of 2015.
However, you don’t have to wait until next year to get great food at 750 East 7th Street! This Saturday, August 17, Urban Oasis will be hosting its first Food Fest on the site of our future store! Urban Oasis, Tracy Sides’ vision for bringing a hub for food access to the East Side of Saint Paul, was the recipient of $1 million in funding from the St.Paul foundation. Sides, one of our board members, was also a founding member of the Gateway Food Co-op.
Food Fest is a free community food festival, with lots of fun activities, including samples from East Side food vendors, and a canning demonstration, so don’t leave your tomatoes at home! We are a sponsor of the event, and are excited to see folks from the neighborhood in addition to extending our support to an organization committed to improving food access and building community on the East Side of Saint Paul. We hope to see you there!
