Positive Change: Cycles for Change

We’re proud that our reusable bag donation program reflects our overall mission as a co-op. With Positive Change, your reusable bag credit is worth 10¢ each. Choose to keep it, or donate it to our monthly non-profit recipients. Plus, in the spirit of making a greater impact on our community, you can round up to support these organizations every time you shop! In June, your donations will go to support the work of Cycles for Change.

Cycles for Change

Cycles for Change builds a diverse and empowered community of bicyclists by implementing a variety of programs that support people in getting access to:

  • a used bicycle
  • free bicycle repair and open shop nights
  • community education and bike maintenance classes

Cycles for Change Youth Apprenticeship Program

The youth apprenticeship program engages high school-aged young people from low-income households and communities of color in a year-long job training and leadership development program. The program improves youths’ academic success and college readiness through mentoring and peer support, trains them in accessing jobs, and helps them to engage their peers and families to use bicycles as a tool for affordable, reliable transportation. Beyond providing basic job training, the youth apprenticeship trains the next generation of bicycle and community leaders.

The youth apprenticeship program seeks to build skills in three key areas:
1. Critical Thinking and Team Building
2. Job Training
3. Community Engagement and Leadership Development

Positive Change donations will go to:

Donation raised through the Positive Change program will support an expansion of the youth apprenticeship program to serve low-income youth and youth of color from the Frogtown/Rondo neighborhood.

By providing youth with the expertise they need in bicycle mechanics, advocacy, health equity, and transportation, they are equipped to pass along that knowledge to others so they may also have access to healthy transportation that gets them to school and work. Youth in the apprenticeship program will have opportunities to attend educational field trip and act as Cycles for Change staff leading classes, workshops, and community bike rides.

Meet Cycle for Change

Cycles for Change will be tabling at all three stores in June. In addition to tabling, a Cycles for Change mechanic will be stationed out front of the East 7th and West 7th stores with a repair stand, pump, and tools for a bicycle safety check and quick adjustments. If you’ve gotten your bicycle out of storage, have some bicycle questions, or would like to learn more about what services and programs C4C offers, stop by and speak with C4C staff and youth apprentices! Below are the tabling dates:

  • West 7th – Thursday, June 2, 3:30-5:30 p.m.
  • East 7th – Monday, June 6, 3:30-5:30 p.m.
  • Selby – Thursday, June 9, 3:30-5:30 p.m.
