Positive Change: Midwest Food Connection

We’re proud that our reusable bag donation program reflects our overall mission as a co-op. With Positive Change, your reusable bag credit is worth 10¢ each. Choose to keep it, or donate it to our monthly non-profit recipients. Plus, in the spirit of making a greater impact on our community, you can round up to support these organizations every time you shop! In November, your donations will go to support the work of Midwest Food Connection (MFC).

MFC creates elementary school lessons specifically for kindergarten, primary, and intermediate grades. Each year they partner with over 50 schools in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area, reaching over 6,700 children with classroom lessons. MCF’s educators teach about healthy eating, local and natural foods, as well as sustainable and organic agriculture. MCF’s interactive curriculum focuses on:

• Providing children with opportunities to study and taste natural and organic foods.
• Creating an understanding in children of the origins and traditions of regionally produced foods.
• Teaching children about the methods and benefits of organic and sustainable agriculture.
• Organizing and leading field trips to local diversified farms.

In 1993 Mississippi Market and the Wedge Co-op started a community outreach program to send teachers into elementary schools to teach about natural foods.  In 1997 we formed a formal non-profit organization to accomplish this mission, called Midwest Food Connection. Since then, Mississippi Market, along with other Twin Cities food co-ops, has funded this program and served on their Board of Directors.
