In January, your donations will go to support the work of the the Permaculture Research Institute (PRI).
Through research, education & community-building, Permaculture Research Institute (PRI) is fostering the creation of permaculture systems for living sustainably in cold climates.
What is permaculture?
Permaculture is a design practice often known as, “learning to work with Nature to design ecosystems and communities that meet human needs while rejuvenating the land around us.”
How will PRI use the Positive Change donations that they recieve?
Financial barriers often prevent people from pursuing their goals of establishing farming operations in neighborhoods where there is the most need. With support from Mississippi Market, PRI will provide farmers scholarships to the hands-on Apprenticeship and Urban Farming Certification programs.
The scholarships will go towards training 25 new farmers from low-income, immigrant and or/native communities within St. Paul & Minneapolis, and will provide them with access to land and the farm training needed to launch businesses, become teachers, and grow healthy food in their neighborhoods. The training then supports them to teach others in their own neighborhoods. The training program applications open in January 2016 and the program begins in April 2016.
More about the Urban Farming Certification Program:
In 2010, PRI launched the Twin Cities’ first Urban Farming Certification Program to meet the increased demand for local foods by training urban farmers in organic, sustainable, and high-production agriculture. The Urban Farming Certification Program is specifically designed to provide urban farmers with the unique knowledge required for driving innovation within the growing urban farming market.
