Image for 2024 Annual <br> Spring Plant Sale

Known for a comprehensive assortment of Minnesota natives and an extensive vegetable and herb selection, our annual plant sale enthusiastically ushers in the return of Minnesota’s peak growing season. This year’s sale will run April 24 through May 27 at all three stores.

Our plants are locally sourced from Glacial Ridge Growers (Glenwood, Minn.), Green Earth Growers (Prior Lake, Minn.), Rush Creek Growers (Spring Valley, Wis.), B and D Farms (Northfield, Minn.), Urban Roots (St. Paul, Minn.), Prairie Smoke Gardens (St. Paul, Minn.), Northwood Mushrooms (Clayton, Wis.), and Barefoot Nursery (Blaine, Minn.).  They are strongly committed to sustainable and organic growing practices and are vigilant about preventing the spread of invasive species.

Plant Talk!

Edible Landscaping — We carry a great selection of tasty, productive, and beautiful vegetables and herbs—red African Eggplant, Dazzling Blue Kale, Fennel, sage, many basils, sweet potato, Jimmy Nardello, Purple Jalapenos and Aleppo peppers, and nasturtium, to name a few. Vegetables can be just as much at home in a perennial garden as in a vegetable garden.

Succession planting – What is it? Staggered plantings throughout the summer and fall of shorter season vegetables to increase overall yield in the garden. Examples of easy shorter season crops would be radishes, beans, lettuces, and greens.  Here is an idea: buy a 4 or 6 pack of lettuce, kale or other greens and a package of similar seed.  Plant them at the same time and have a continuous harvest all summer long!

Pepper Collection – our pepper collection is one of the best in the Twin Cities!  69 different varieties of hot, mild, and sweet peppers.  Nearly a third of them (18) of them grown especially for the Mississippi Market Plant sale.

What’s New

New Vender Urban Roots: Native 4-packs! Urban Roots is a youth development program (and our Positive Change recipient this coming July!) and one of the largest youth employers on the East Side. They create economic and educational opportunities for under-resourced, majority BIPOC youth, preparing them for academic and professional success while addressing immediate community needs around fresh food access, the environment, and wellbeing.

New Vender Northwood Mushrooms: Mushroom Logs! Formerly known as Cherry Tree House Mushrooms, Northwood Mushrooms began as an urban foraging endeavor in 2008. Founded by Jeremy, the farm initially focused on growing mushrooms in various neighborhood yards before relocating to Maplewood, Minnesota in 2012. Facing challenges and frequent moves, the farm eventually settled in Clayton, Wisconsin in 2016. With ample space for expansion, Northwood Mushrooms continues to thrive, emphasizing its connection to nature and wood-based growing methods. Despite the journey’s challenges, the farm remains dedicated to cultivating high-quality mushrooms and looks forward to future growth and innovation.
