Create Positive Change
Each time you shop at the co-op, you have a chance to directly support local community partners by donating your 10-cent reusable bag credits and rounding up your purchases to the nearest dollar. It may only be a few cents or spare change, but your generosity makes a huge impact — to the tune of over $10,000 each month for our Positive Change recipients!
St. Paul & Ramsey County Domestic Abuse Intervention Project
February’s Positive Change recipient is Saint Paul & Ramsey County Domestic Abuse Intervention Project (SPIP), which exists to eliminate domestic violence against women and their children, and the social and systemic responses that condone or allow oppression.
Since 1984, SPIP has provided victims of domestic abuse and their children the critical services and protections they need to live free from violence in their own homes and neighborhoods. SPIP offers a continuum of multilingual and culturally competent 24-hour crisis intervention services, and longer-term direct advocacy, safety, support and legal services to more than 5,800 individuals and their children annually. SPIP also responds to more than 8,000 calls a year to their 24-hour crisis line.
Beyond the immediate crisis of escaping violence, survivors need assistance with long-term safety planning in order to rebuild their lives. SPIP’s services range from obtaining 911 phones, rent support, immediate food and financial assistance, counseling and health services, child care, education, employment opportunities, and ongoing support.
Donations will be especially helpful during the pandemic, as SPIP has seen a 12% increase in calls to their 24-hour crisis line and requests for assistance from victims dealing with incidents of domestic assault. Participants are experiencing the intense pressures of having their abusive partners sheltering at home with them and their children during this time of heightened stress for families and the whole community.
February Positive Change donations will help offset the rising demand for emergency services such as security and safety planning, rent, food access, and more to victims of domestic violence and their children in St. Paul and Ramsey County.
