Create Positive Change

Each time you shop at the co-op, you have a chance to directly support local nonprofits by donating your 10-cent reusable bag credits and rounding up your purchases to the nearest dollar. It may only be a few cents or spare change, but your generosity makes a huge impact — to the tune of over $11,000 each month for our Positive Change recipients!

St. Paul Youth Services

July’s Positive Change recipient is St. Paul Youth Services (SPYS), a nonprofit organization working to improve our community’s collective ability to engage and support Black youth by pioneering practices, creating tools, and sharing resources. They envision a community where Black youth are safe to live fully and freely.

SPYS has been rewriting the rules of youth engagement, creating the conditions for Black youth to be their full selves, amplify their power and brilliance, and drive systemic change. Through the below programs, SPYS works to create systemic change for youth through in-school and in-community services and through advocacy that focuses on addressing the underlying barriers to equity.

  • YouthPowerMN: Organizing hubs where Black youth can reflect, build skills, organize, and advocate for change on issues that affect their lives
  • Behavior intervention program (BIP): In-school behavioral intervention and support
  • Pre-charge diversion program: Helping young people to avoid repeat mistakes and stay out of the criminal justice system
  • Workshops and training: Training partner organizations to more effectively engage with young people

July Positive Change donations will support three SPYS programs: the behavior intervention program, providing in-school support for students; the pre-charge diversion program, offering restorative justice alternatives to juvenile sentences; and YouthPowerMediaMN, an online storytelling hub for Black youth to reclaim and celebrate their identity.
