Create Positive Change
Each time you shop at the co-op, you have a chance to directly support local community partners by donating your 10-cent reusable bag credits and rounding up your purchases to the nearest dollar. It may only be a few cents or spare change, but your generosity makes a huge impact — to the tune of over $10,000 each month for our Positive Change recipients.
In response to the brutal murder of George Floyd and the continued inequality and oppression experienced by BIPOC in our communities, we have decided to change June’s Positive Change recipient to two organizations: Midway United Fund and Voices for Racial Justice. Mississippi Market will match all donations dollar for dollar up to $10,000, and share the total equally between the two organizations. Maximize your impact as we rebuild our community and work towards a more just world!
Midway United Fund
The Midway United Fund is helping the Midway and Union Park small business and nonprofit community rebuild their storefronts during this time of need.
The Midway United Fund was originally established to provide financial support to local businesses and residents to support economic development activities, place making, public art, and projects preventing displacement and gentrification. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, they knew small businesses needed help and distributed $75,000 in funding to 30 small businesses. After the Midway protests during the last week of May, their focus shifted to helping the hundreds of small businesses and nonprofits rebuild their storefronts. The Midway United Fund is able to continually pivot to meet the community’s needs because it is a neighborhood initiative with the core principles of citizen-led change, community vision, cost-effectiveness, and collaboration.
All donations will support rebuilding storefronts of affected small businesses and nonprofits in our Saint Paul community in the months ahead.
Voices for Racial Justice
Voices for Racial Justice is a movement organization of leaders, organizers and culture workers who envision a world without racism honoring the culture, knowledge, power, and healing of Black, Indigenous, and communities of color. They are committed to building power through collective cultural & healing strategies for racial justice across Minnesota using organizing, leadership training, community policy & research.
Voices for Racial Justice was founded in 1993 to strengthen the field of organizing in Minnesota and today focuses on nurturing an ecosystem of restorative racial justice movements. Their work is guided by a “soil tending” approach as a change-making strategy. This approach focuses on tending to the soil, which is our values, narratives, culture, and beliefs, to build a sustained & life-giving approach to racial justice organizing.
Currently, they are working in coalition to support black led organizations in our community around protests and events. They are also helping to provide needed supplies, providing input into policy changes needed, and uplifting healing spaces for the community.
All donations will support racial justice organizing, training, and community policy.
Note: Our original June Positive Change recipient, Sustainable Farming Association (SFA) has graciously switched months to route funds where they are needed most in our community right now. SFA will be featured for a future month.
