Create Positive Change

Each time you shop at the co-op, you have a chance to directly support local community partners by donating your 10-cent reusable bag credits and rounding up your purchases to the nearest dollar. It may only be a few cents or spare change, but your generosity makes a huge impact — to the tune of over $10,000 each month for our Positive Change recipients!

Open Arms of Minnesota

Feeding people with life-threatening illnesses

October’s Positive Change recipient is Open Arms of Minnesota, a nonprofit that delivers free, nutritious meals to individuals and their families experiencing a significant health crisis or life-threatening illness. Open Arms cooks and delivers over half a million meals annually to over 1,000 clients living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and ALS. Healthy meals are also delivered to clients’ children and their caregivers.

Clients can choose from meals tailored to meet their medical needs and lifestyles. Chefs prepare the meals in-house, using organic ingredients and making food from scratch as much as possible. Much of the food they prepare comes from five vacant city lots that Open Arms has transformed into urban gardens where they grow organic vegetables and herbs for their meal program and a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Part of the money made from selling CSA shares to the public is used to financially support client meal delivery.

October Positive Change funds will support Open Arms’ fall meal deliveries, which includes a Thanksgiving meal in November. $60 can provide one client with one week’s worth of meals; $3,120 can feed a client for an entire year. Open Arms anticipates that 624,000 meals will be delivered this year with the help of over 7,600 volunteers.
