Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

At Mississippi Market Co-op, we support and celebrate everyone’s unique identities, perspectives, and abilities. We believe that our diversity adds value and makes our co-op stronger. For this reason, we continually work to foster a diverse, inclusive, and accessible environment where everyone is able to be their authentic selves. This empowers co-op staff to contribute their best efforts toward creating a shopping experience and organizational culture where all shoppers, vendors, and staff feel welcomed, represented, and respected.

We hold diversity, equity and inclusion as intrinsic co-op values and strive to ensure they are reflected in every aspect of how we operate. This is imperative to upholding our cooperative mission of empowering our diverse communities. By acting together in solidarity, we continually pursue our goals of creating a more just food system and more equitable society. Organization-wide, 36% of our staff identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or person of color) and we continually work to increase this number.

Mississippi Market is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge that our three store locations in Imni Ża Ska in Mni Sota Makoce (now known as Saint Paul, Minnesota) are on the traditional territory of the Dakota people, who have been deeply connected to the land within and beyond the boundaries of our state for centuries.

Product Policy

We are committed to supporting women-owned, BIPOC-owned, sustainable and local businesses. Our preferred products typically fall into at least one of these categories: organic, local, fair trade, ethically produced, minimal packaging, women-owned, BIPOC-owned, regenerative, and/or free from artificial flavors, colors and preservatives.

We create positive change for our local food economy by supporting small, local businesses and farms that:

  • Contribute to a just and equitable economy
  • Are locally produced
  • Are fairly priced
  • Are produced or distributed by cooperatively owned vendors
  • Are available for purchase on the WIC program

Sustainability

At Mississippi Market, sustainability is a driving value. We strive to empower our community to make choices that help sustain our planet and aim to be a source of local, sustainable products and education about food-related issues. We’re committed to minimizing food waste in a number of ways, and we partner with vendors who follow sustainable and ethical production, and who use compostable or recyclable packaging when possible. We look for vendors whose products are:

  • Certified organic
  • Free of growth hormones or antibiotics
  • Produced using practices that support sustainable agriculture
  • Raised using sound animal husbandry and humane practices
