International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8 is “a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.” Observed since the early 20th century, IWD is an annual celebration of women and a call to accelerate gender equality through a show of unity, solidarity, reflection, advocacy, and action.
This year, celebrate IWD at the co-op by supporting the women makers, farmers, and business owners of local products found at the co-op.

Roseline's Candles

Roseline’s Candles is a Black woman- and immigrant-owned business in Minneapolis. Her candles are made with cotton wicks and 100% soy wax, and are hand-poured in recycled glass jars. Sustainability is a key tenet in Roseline’s business, and to support her work, we add a $1 glass deposit to each candle purchase. After you’ve used up your candle, please bring the empty container to the co-op to receive your deposit back. Then we’ll return the container to Roseline to clean and reuse for more candles!

Angelica’s Garden
Elmwood, WI
Angelica grows two acres of organic green cabbage, Napa cabbage, garlic, daikon radishes and more and makes sauerkraut, her kimchi, sauerkraut, curtido, and other fermented products on site in their farmhouse.

La Perla Tortilleria

After husband and wife Jose and Noemi Payan moved to Minnesota from Chicago in 1994, they quickly realized that there were no tortillerias to be found. They decided to make and sell their own tortillas under the name La Perla, meaning “the pearl.” Today, they have dozens of employees, multiple locations, and make and sell more tortillas than anyone else in the city!

MinnTofu

MinnTofu is a local Minnesota startup with a singular focus on producing wholesome and environmentally sustainable plant-based foods, with locally farmed soybeans. MinnTofu was started by Yan Small, a licensed food safety instructor from St. Paul who teaches classes to food handlers and managers. The lack of freshly made tofu in Minnesota inspired Yan to fill the void for local consumers who want fresh tofu in their diet. Yan, as an Asian American woman, is passionate about the health benefits of plant-based foods. In 2018 Yan teamed up with Rafik Moore to make her dream of providing plant-based foods a reality to share with others who are passionate about a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Seven Sundays

Seven Sundays founders discovered muesli on their honeymoon in New Zealand. Over the course of 6 weeks of hiking and camping, a nourishing breakfast became extra important and muesli became a staple that they looked forward to each morning. Not long after returning home, they were craving that New Zealand-style muesli. Hannah did her best to replicate the recipe and their first bag of muesli was sold at a Minneapolis farmer’s market in 2011.

CannonBelles is a woman- and veteran-owned artisan cheese company in Cannon Falls. Friends Jackie, Kathy and Deeann began their cheesemaking journey in 2012 with a homemade mozzarella, then worked to make their cheese better and better — visiting numerous cheese plants in Minnesota and Wisconsin, joining the American Cheese Society, and taking courses to learn as much as possible. They made their first commercial cheese in August of 2016, and CannonBelles now makes a variety of family-friendly cheeses, from gouda and queso fresco to cheddar and cheese curds.

This woman-owned, family-run business bakes over 4,000 bagels from scratch every day, which are delivered fresh daily to Mississippi Market. Their bagels, including Plain, Poppy Seed, Sesame, Everything, Cinnamon Raisin, and more, are all-natural and made without preservatives of any kind. You’ll also find several tubs of their delectable cream cheeses on our shelves.

Rochdale Farms
Western WI
Rochdale Farms, the creation of Mary Bess Michaletz and Bentley Lein, is locally and cooperatively owned. It was created with the intention to foster the growth of small local dairy producers and create delicious, artisan cheeses, hand rolled butters, and cream-top yogurts. Rochdale sells all of their creative dairy products exclusively to Midwestern natural food cooperatives. Most of the milk they use comes from a network of over 325 small Amish family farms spread across Wisconsin and Minnesota. These family-run farms take an extraordinary amount of care to treat their animals and land with care.

Artisan Naan Bakery
St. Cloud, MN
Tahir Sandhu and Gwen Williams opened their small-batch naan bakery in November 2014. Their hand-tossed, never-frozen naan is made with artisan flour from King Arthur Flour Company; local Minnesota products such as whole milk from Stony Creek Dairy and Smude’s extra virgin sunflower oil; and their own house-made yogurt. Their Marvel Naan, with a bolder and slightly nuttier flavor than traditional naan, is made with Kernza, a sustainable, perennial-grain flour. Tahir and Gwen love naan; it’s their preferred bread at home no matter what kind of meal they are eating — classic Punjabi foods, fried eggs, soups, chili, lasagna, sandwiches and more.

Redhead Creamery

Woman-owned and -operated, Redhead Creamery has been making artisan, farmstead cheese since 2013. Named after co-owner Alise Sjostrom, the creamery is a childhood dream come to fruition on her family’s dairy farm. The term farmstead is indicative of cheese made directly on the farm where fresh milk is collected, allowing the creamery the unique ability to adjust the milks’ fat and protein levels to impact the final cheeses’ rich textures and flavors.

Komoni was founded in 2015 by Evangeline Stacy who creates therapeutic bath and body care products in small batches. All Komoni products use plant-based ingredients and recyclable, locally sourced packaging. No synthetic chemicals or fragrances, fillers, artificial colors, petroleum, formaldehyde or parabens are ever used. A percentage of net sales is donated to the Clean the World Foundation, supporting efforts to reduce body care waste from the hospitality industry and improve access to personal hygiene products for vulnerable communities.

Started by four friends with a mission to rid the bathroom of plastic, HiBar shampoo and conditioner bars are all-natural and made with plant-based ingredients. Their cardboard and paper packaging are also recyclable and compostable, resulting in zero plastic waste.

One Love Bread

One Love Bread started baking bread in 2010. They started out at farmers markets, building a loyal community of customers that are still coming back for more after all these years. Their mission is to “…supply the best food on earth to the people of our communities, using organic flour and organic seeds, using natural starter culture (sourdough) and slow and cool fermentation.”

Mogi Bagel
Minneapolis, MN
Founded by Megan Berray-Larsen in January 2023, Mogi Bagel has quickly become a beloved name in the Twin Cities for their delicious New York-style bagels. Megan began her bagel journey in her home kitchen, driven by a passion for creating the perfect bagel and filling a gap in the Minneapolis market. Mogi Bagels are sweetened with malt, hand-rolled, boiled in a water and malt bath, and then baked to achieve their signature crispy exterior and soft, chewy inside.

Marieke Gouda
Thorp, WI
Marieke was born and raised in the Netherlands where she grew up on her parents’ 60-cow dairy farm. After moving to the U.S., she started a 350-cow dairy farm and began producing authentic Dutch gouda in Thorp, Wisconsin. In 2015, Marieke was the first woman to win the Wisconsin outstanding young farmer award. The equipment, cultures, herbs and spices she uses are all imported from Holland. Milk for Marieke’s Gouda is rBGH-free and comes from nearby Penterman Farm cows, directly from the first milking of the day.
