Image for Staff Profile: Meet Tenn Bennett

As a community-owned and cooperatively operated business, co-op employees are some of Mississippi Market’s greatest assets. Our friendly, dedicated staff possess a wealth of knowledge. They work diligently to provide you with access to the freshest, healthiest foods and the safest, most effective personal health and beauty care products available. Our three stores employ over 200 people from our surrounding local communities who are passionate about sustainably grown and humanely raised foods; supporting local family farmers, vendors and makers; and nurturing the health of people and the planet. We wouldn’t be here without them!

Meet Tenn Bennett – West 7th Grocery Stocker

How long have you worked at the co-op?

I’ve worked at the co-op for nearly 11 years. I grew up eating healthy, natural foods in Jamaica and come from a strong community. I was introduced to the co-op from a long-time member. The co-op has a wonderful supportive community of vendors, workers and shoppers, so I felt right at home here. I feel good making a difference in people’s lives.

What do you love about your job?

I love the co-op atmosphere, as well as the staff and shoppers. I’ve formed wonderful bonds with regular shoppers, especially those living in the neighborhood. I enjoy the hard work and it helps me stay fit.

How are your personal values reflected in your work?

I grew up with a strong work ethic, and the co-op values that. I also get spiritual happiness through being kind and helpful to others. I feel great about working in a diverse community that values social justice and a healthy environment.

What do you like to do during your free time?

In my free time I like to go to local parks and lakes, so I can reflect on life and write music for guitar and vocals. I perform in two local bands, which are the Tropics Steel Drum Band and the International Reggae All Stars. I have traveled both nationally and internationally to perform and I have experienced many different cultures and interesting foods. I really enjoyed performing at the annual co-op member’s meeting in the past. I also have performed at area libraries and the Festival of Nations for over 20 years.

What are some of your favorite products found at the co-op?

I love the seafood, chicken feet, bulk foods and fresh produce. My sister is a chef and I love preparing traditional Jamaican chicken foot soup, jerk chicken, fried plantain, and seasoned rice and beans. I can do one-stop shopping because the co-op carries everything I need.
