Join Chef Flor Alvarez for a Sopes cooking class at the co-op in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a hands-on experience forming and cooking this treat. Sopes is a traditional dish of fried masa cake with savory toppings. Come ready to learn more about Salvadoran cooking and hear stories of Flor’s experience as a chef.

This class and recipe utilize Maseca and all-purpose flour. As we seek to honor the recipe’s heritage and tradition, this class is not the best option for someone who is gluten-free or celiac. Our Hmong Cooking class could be a good option for this month if you have that specific food need!

Learn more about National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans as we celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries. During this month and throughout the year, the National Park Service and our partners, share history, heritage, and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino Americans of past and present.

What to expect

In a hands-on sopes cooking class, you can expect an immersive culinary experience where you’ll learn to make this traditional  dish from scratch. The class typically begins with an introduction to ingredients like masa harina, beans, and various toppings. You’ll be guided through the process of forming, cooking, and assembling the sopes, gaining insight into techniques such as kneading masa, shaping the dough, and frying or baking. Along the way, Flor often shares tips for perfecting flavors. By the end, you’ll have a delicious plate of sopes and the skills to recreate them at home.
