Traditional Yemeni food staples include lamb, chicken, rice, potatoes, eggs, freshly baked flatbreads, and ground spices such as cumin, cardamom, and turmeric. Though typically thought of as originating from Israel and northern Africa, shakshouka is a dish enjoyed by many Middle Eastern countries. Try our take on this scrumptious dish with zhoug, a Yemeni green sauce made with herbs and chili peppers, for a refreshing twist on a classic one-skillet meal.

The Syrian cooking tradition is one of the oldest in the world. Syrian cooking ingredients are varied and dishes are full of hearty flavors and aromatic spices. Today's feature recipe, Sayadieh, is a sensational dish of fish with spiced rice and caramelized onions from the Syrian coast on the Mediterranean. The rice is cooked with caramelized onion and fragrant spices, then topped with the seared fish and more caramelized onions.

At Mississippi Market, we celebrate the rich cultural diversity and food and farming traditions that immigrants bring to our community. Today we’re highlighting a traditional recipe from Sudan. Sudan is as diverse and colorful in its cuisine and dietary traditions as its climate. The cuisine is a blend of many backgrounds and cultures, and Central Sudan is home to the most diverse food traditions. One dietary staple is a type of bread called kisra - a thin fermented bread made of durra or corn, and is often served with a stew. Another popular dish served in Sudan is ful medames (also spelled foul medames) - a recipe made with cooked and mashed fava beans. It is both flavorful and nutritious!

Today we’re highlighting cultural food traditions from Iraq, a country whose cuisine staples include goat, lamb, and chicken; grains such as bulgar wheat, barley, and rice; fresh vegetables; and an array of aromatic spices. We highly recommend trying the following two vegetarian recipes for fresh fattoush and tabbouleh. These salads go great with homemade hummus, falafel, lamb meatballs, and chicken or beef kabobs and gyros.

Today we’re highlighting a modern Somali recipe from our friend and member-owner, Fatima Ali. Fatima has been a member of Mississippi Market for a number of years, ever since her friend introduced her to the co-op- it’s now her “very favorite place to grocery shop”. Fatima works as a Licensed Dental Assistant at Community Dental Care and is a Diabetes Prevention Coach at the YMCA. In addition, she studies at Metropolitan State University, where she partnered with us to write this article for a public speaking class.
